Imagine

Imagine a safari that is  … sophisticated and exclusive, offering privacy, flexibility and the undivided attention of each camp owner, manager, and safari director who are the consummate hosts, your personal guides to the bush, as well as dinner companions around a great table every evening. (But only if that is your desire, of course.)

On a Micato Custom Safari you will …

On a Micato Custom Safari you will. … live the life of the landed locals on their ranches and private game reserves. You will have a home and a place in Africa. This experience is quite different from a typical safari.

Activities are not fixed according to a predetermined schedule

Activities are not fixed according to a predetermined schedule … but decided by you, on the spot, following your impulses. Every morning your safari directors describe various options and your staff is at the ready. Then it’s your call. (Such decisions!)

Special Experiences

The BIG Five

The Big Five (lion, leopard, Cape buffalo, rhino, and great rumbling caravans of elephants) are much in evidence, along with nearly 500 bird species (70 of them raptors), a few dozen other big mammal species, including half a million subtly exquisite Thomson’s gazelles (“as finely constructed as luxury watches, their coats as shiny as any best in show,” as we say in the Micato brochure) and the 1,300,000 wildebeest and 200,000 zebras whose famous migration more or less constantly churns its way around the Serengeti-Maasai Mara, following the shifting rains.

Mt Kenya

One of Africa’s most marvelous ornaments, 17, 057-foot Mount Kenya, seat of Ngai, God himself, is the only mountain in the world to give its name to a country.

It’s easy to see why Mount Kenya exerts such an influence. The three million-year old, still- glaciated stratovolcano rises in lordly isolation, slowly, elegantly, then thrusts heavenward in rocky exuberance. Visible for hundreds of miles in all directions, it constantly draws our attention. Its moods shift mercurially: clear and often snow-dusted in the mornings, by afternoon it’s hidden by massive, near-ionospheric clouds. A difficult, technical ascent, Mount Kenya has a fascinating climbing history (including a secret romp high on the mountain by three Italians during World War II who slipped out of their internment camp, spent 18 days on the mountain, then slipped back, no worse for wear). Mount Kenya

Trip Highlights

  • Accommodations according to the itinerary in the amazing Hemingways Nairobi, the splendid Bateleur Camp, the exquisite Mount Kenya Safari Club, the wonderful Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, the exclusive Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, and the Four Points by Sheraton Nairobi Airport Hotel.
  • A personal Micato Safari Director, who will travel with your party throughout your safari, as well as the services of Micato Driver Guides. Micato is immensely proud of its cadre of Safari Directors. Seasoned professionals with an average of ten years’ experience in the bush, they work exclusively for Micato. In addition to guiding forays into the bush and ensuring a seamlessly smooth safari from beginning to end, our Safari Directors lecture on flora and fauna, impart fascinating nuggets of African history, Swahili, and tribal folklore, and very often become treasured traveling companions.
  • Our highly trained and certified Driver Guides regularly attend brush-up classes in conservation techniques, the latest news from East Africa’s world of palaeoanthropology, guest relations, and many et ceteras (including CPR training; every Safari Director and Driver Guide is fully certified).
  • Micato’s unique Private Concierge Service available in person or phone 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from just about anywhere a Micato safari will take you, from deep in the bush to downtown Nairobi. They’re ready to get your prescription medicine to you, make flight changes, return the backpack you left at the previous camp, or arrange a dinner reservation. If you need it, they’ll move mountains to get it done.
  • All tips and gratuities are included, from touchdown to takeoff and at every point in between. This includes traditional trip-end gratuities for Safari Directors and Driver Guides, tips to porters, hotel concierges, waiters, anybody and everybody. It’s our pleasure to take care of these things for you; we’re travellers, too, and we know what a balm it can be to have nagging concerns erased from our vacationing consciousness.
  • All activities, sightseeing excursions, and game drives in the city and in the bush as noted in the itinerary.
  • A Hot air balloon Safari over the Maasai Mara.
