The Naples Sailing and Yacht Club – Commodores Cruise July 25, 2022 On The Blue Danube with Helen Keplinger & DJ Warner

Join Commodore Tom McCarthy and his lovely wife, Dianne on the picturesque “river of kings” as it carves a winding path through a total of ten modern-day European nations with landscapes characterized by vineyards, forested slopes, wine-producing villages and imposing fortresses that remain a testimony to kingdoms and culture… regal, romantic and ready to welcome Tauck river cruisers.

You’ll visit Prague, Bratislava, Regensburg, Vienna, Budapest and Salzburg.

All of this history while learning about the wines of the region from one of the top wine makers in the United States with wines continually rated from 92 to 99.

Helen Keplinger

Keplinger is a boutique husband and wife winery focused on single-vineyard wines from compelling sites in Napa, Sonoma, and the Sierra Foothills. Helen started the wine label with Rhone varietals after making wine in Priorat, Spain for three years. Working with both young and old vine Grenache on llicorella soil in a variety of microclimates was a quick and deep study in the beauty of terroir – this experience, and many years of apprenticeship with brilliant mentors like Heidi Barrett, and making wine in Napa Valley have greatly informed her winemaking philosophy and practices. She was named “Winemaker of the Year” in 2012 by Food and Wine Magazine, and honored with the cover story of the June 2014 Wine Spectator. Bottlings of Keplinger have been rated by various top critics, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, Wine Spectator & Jeb Dunnuck, from 92 through 99 points. With traditional methods in the winery – native yeasts, low-sulfur aging and bottling, no fining or filtration – these wines are made to be the purest expression of site and vintage possible. www.keplingerwines.com

Join us as we cruise from Prague to Budapest and also visit Bratislava, Regensburg, Vienna and Salzburg.

Itinerary

Day 1: Budapest

Tour begins: 6:00 PM at Kempinski Hotel Corvinus
Budapest. A transfer is included from Budapest’s Ferenc
Liszt Airport or Keleti train station to Kempinski Hotel
Corvinus Budapest.

Day 2: Budapest

Budapest is split into the sections of Buda and Pest by the
Danube River. This morning, explore the Pest side of the
city on a tour including City Park and Heroes’ Square –
bounded by some of the finest architectural works in
Hungary – and a special visit to the opulent State Opera
House, opened in 1884, with its royal boxes, gilded
vaulted ceiling, exquisite murals and three-ton chandelier.
THE BLUE DANUBE
Later, you have a choice of a themed walking tour that
focuses on the Hungarian Revolution and includes the
Parliament building, the Embassy, Heroes’ Square, and St.
Stephen’s Basilica; a guided visit to Dohány Synagogue; a
guided bicycle tour in Budapest; or an optional visit to the
Széchenyi Spa. The rest of the day and evening are free
for you to pursue what interests you most in Budapest, as
you get set to cruise the Danube tomorrow.

Day 3: Explore Buda and board the riverboat

Board your riverboat this afternoon
in Budapest, and meet your crew at the welcome reception
followed by dinner. Sail for Bratislava, Slovakia.

Day 4: Bratislava

Our resident expert takes you inside contemporary Slovakia
and Bratislava for a look at the region’s politics, economy,
religion, social order, preservation and emergence of the
arts.

Day 5: Vienna & An Imperial Evening

Your riverboat arrives overnight in Vienna, Austria, where
an introductory tour of this former capital of the old
Habsburg Empire precedes a walking tour focusing on
your choice of either medieval Vienna or the Jewish district
of old Vienna, or a bicycle ride in the city. The rest of
the day is free. Nothing compares to the royal treatment
and pageantry you’ll experience tonight at our private
Imperial Evening in the Palais Pallavicini, a private Baroque
palace in Vienna that film buffs may recall from the film
noir classic The Third Man. Cocktails and dinner precede
an unforgettable spectacle of beautiful ball gowns and a
musical performance celebrating Strauss.

Day 6: Vienna & on to Durnstein

choice of sightseeing this morning features a tour of the
Habsburgs’ Schönbrunn Palace, or the Museum of Fine
Arts. Shuttles are ready to bring you back to the riverboat
before we cruise the Danube River through Austria’s
Wachau Valley; glide past castles and abbeys to medieval
Dürnstein, and arrive late this evening.

Day 7: Durnstein & the Wachau Valley

Dock in Dürnstein for a look at its 16th-century Baroque
houses and 13th-century Romanesque church on a
walking tour along cobblestone streets; you may also
choose to tour a local monastery, or take a bicycle ride.
Enjoy free time in this charming riverside town.

Day 8: Salzburg

Your boat stays docked in Linz as you choose how you
spend your day – full-day excursions to Salzburg (Austria),
or Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic, or remaining
in Linz. A setting for The Sound of Music, Salzburg is
enticing with Baroque churches and palaces. Our walking
tour explores Old Town, Mirabell Gardens, and Mozart’s
birthplace. Or travel to Cesky Krumlov, a complex of
elegant Renaissance-era buildings overlooking an incredibly
well-preserved medieval town. A third option allows you to
remain in Linz and explore on your own. Tonight enjoy a
classical music performance aboard the ship.

Day 9: Cycling Along the Danube

Wake up in Engelhartszell, a pretty town on the Danube
in Upper Austria. Visit a private home for cake, coffee,
and sweets, then choose between a walking tour of
town including 18th-century Engelhartszell Abbey and
Danube-World, or a guided tour of the Jochenstein Lock
on the river. Following lunch, join us for an optional bicycle
excursion along the Danube (a fairly rigorous bike ride,
for experienced cyclists only). Take in the views from the
sun deck, lounge, or the windows of your cabin as your
riverboat cruises into Germany; enjoy a farewell reception
followed by dinner onboard this evening.

Day 10: Regensburg & Prague

Most departures disembark in Vilshofen where you have
a choice of visiting the Bavarian town of Regensburg, or
heading straight to Prague, capital of the Czech Republic.
If you choose to travel directly to Prague, you’ll explore the
ancient Hradcany (Castle) district on a guided excursion
that includes the stunning Baroque libraries of Strahov
Monastery – where a private tour is a Tauck Exclusive –
and a taste of Prague Castle. If you choose to visit
Regensburg, a local guide will show you Steinerne Brücke
(a medieval stone bridge over the Danube), Dom St. Peter
and the remains of the Roman wall; you’ll have time to
spend as you please before driving to Prague.

Day 11: Prague

Today in Prague you’ll begin with a choice of three
walking tours through Prague’s ethereal Old Town. First,
a visit to the city’s poignant Jewish sites in Josefov, the
historic Jewish Quarter (ask at booking about dates that
cannot visit inside the Jewish Heritage sites as they are
closed Saturdays and on Jewish holidays; in those cases,
alternate sightseeing will be offered). Alternatively, join us
for a walking tour that takes you through “the centuries,” in
Prague’s Old Town – or you can choose a 60-minute tour
of Old Town with a visit to the Museum of Communism at
the end of it. This evening, cap a memorable river cruise
with a farewell reception, tour and dinner at 16th-century
Lobkowicz Palace in Prague Castle.
