Wine Cruising on the River Rhone
The Rhône River
Since ancient times, the Rhône River has been one of the most significant waterways in Europe. Covering approximately 504 miles, it is the second-longest river in France and the only major river in Europe that flows into the Mediterranean Sea. The Rhône originates in Switzerland as ice melt from the Rhône Glacier in the Swiss Alps, flows southwest from Lake Geneva in Switzerland, through France all the way to the Mediterranean.
The Rhône’s connection to the Mediterranean has long made it a major thoroughfare for trade and travel, and the Rhône River Basin has also been home to a wide variety of cultures over the centuries. During Medieval times, large cathedral towns like Lyon and Avignon emerged among the valley’s hillsides, and the great wine-making tradition of the area began to take root.
Wine Lover’s Adventure
The Rhône region rose to prominence as one of the most important wine-producing regions in the world during the Renaissance and continues to hold that distinction today. The vintners here come from a long pedigree of winemakers that date back to the 16th century. That legacy infuses everything from the lavender fields to the lyonnaise cuisine with richness and decadence. Here, in regions including Provence and Burgundy, the Mediterranean climate produces long, hot summer days and brisk, rainy winters. Like life, these severe growing conditions lead to rich complexity, creating dynamic wines that have become known globally as some of France’s finest vintages – Côtes du Rhône, Pouilly-Fuissé, Beaujolais, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
A cruise down the Rhône River is a fantastic way to explore some of France’s most picturesque villages and experience the country’s finest wines and cuisine first hand. With its fine wines, rich history, and gastronomic offerings, there are abundant adventures to be had on a river cruise down the Rhône.
Imagine you are royalty as you explore medieval castles that dot the shoreline and wonder at the architecture as you pass under centuries-old bridges with Gothic arches and Romanesque columns. Immerse yourself in Roman Catholic history at the Palace of the Popes in Avignon, and walk the streets of the walled city of Viviers to take in the medieval architecture of the 5th century. Taste the unparalleled cuisine of Lyon, the truffles and produce of the markets of Valence, and see the city that enraptured and inspired Vincent Van Gogh.
